The Cuban Table is here!

IMG_3828I am beyond thrilled to announce that The Cuban Table: A Celebration of Food, Flavors, and History is hitting both real and virtual shelves today.  Since our wonderful editor BJ Berti let us know that the finished copies were in the warehouse and on their way a few weeks ago, I imagined receiving them – usually in over-saturated, Doris Day technicolor.  The books would run straight off an assembly line, into a box, and onto a truck that would drop them at my door.  I’d coolly but swiftly rip it open, hand out the books, and and it would be champagne all around.  So many wonderful things have come from this book in the past few weeks that I just needed the one thing that would make it real.  The anticipation was maddening and when the books didn’t come, I took to sad-eying the UPS man when he failed to deliver.  Finally, just a few hours shy of today’s release date, the books arrived and…I wasn’t there.  I came home from a (very un-Doris Day-like) cardio kickboxing class and found the box on my coffee table with a lime green NEW TITLES  sticker splashed across the top and my yorkies yapping furiously around it.  It was later than I’d expected but exactly on time.  Most importantly, it was very, very real. Catching Up in October

October was a whirlwind even before there was a Frankenstorm on the way.  While we wait to wait it out, I thought it was a good time to catch-up for October.  To start, I was thrilled to be part of an article written by Rachel Swarns – In the Kitchen, Holding on to Heritage Before It Slips Awayfor the New York Times.  I’ve also been spending a lot of time at The Latin Kitchen – building up a virtual spice rack both sweet and savory.  To top it all, my sister Carmen (also my partner at La Filosofia) were included in a travel story for New York Magazine that metaphorically sent us to Norway. Hot Chocolate with Máchica

This post is brought to you by several false starts and a Mac meltdown. Last week, I was trying to close out of an application when my computer completely froze. Like anyone who doesn’t really understand them, my first instinct was to do a panicky hard reset. Though it turned on, it only gave me a greyed out start-up screen with the endless scrolling ellipsis doing what I’ve now learned is “beachballing”. Several hours, three calls to Apple support, two failed re-installation attempts, and a visit to the Genius bar later, I still couldn’t get off the beach. Told that I’d most likely have to wipe out my hard drive and start over, I made yet another visit to the Apple store thinking that if it came to that, at least I’d be in a safe place. Read more

Fairy Tale Soup

It was supposed to be a fairy tale.  I found a recipe for pumpkin and crab soup that I couldn’t wait to try, a Cinderella pumpkin I couldn’t wait to photograph, and pound of fresh lump crab meat I couldn’t help but splurge on.  Using a recipe that seemed pretty straight forward if a little vague, I roasted the pumpkin and scooped out a few cups – careful to leave the shell in tact so it could it be used as a tureen – then pureed it with scallions and coriander.  Combining the puree with broth, I added way too much curry (the wooden spoon I used still looks gold plated).  I made some adjustments but it only got the soup madder.  I was moments away from throwing good crab meat into bad recipe when I decided to give up on it altogether.
